Bullying is many different things.
It can be any sort of threat in writing, expressed verbally or physically towards another individual.
Bullying is basically when one person puts another down in any way, shape or form. It can be about physical attributes, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, dress, speech, handicaps, interests, abilities, capabilities, talents, family, friends, music, the food you like, your transportation, neighborhood, house, pets...
...what you have or don't have, your job, your dreams, your likes, your dislikes.
You can harass/be harassed about anything real or perceived. That is what is so horrible.
Bullying creates victims. When you are a victim you can feel sad, lonely, isolated, scared, angry, hopeles and in general feel down about yourself. It seems like an endless spiral of bad things that will not end. Things can get so bad that you don't feel like you can go to school. If you hear them call you that name one more time you think you are going to break, or you don't feel like you can go to the bathroom for fear of being ridiculed or cornered by your peers. It is horrible. You don't know what to do.
Or maybe you keep seeing this kid in the lunch room and they are constantly sitting by themselves. Whenever they go up to their locker you see them reading notes and then they run into the bathroom. One day you find a note that was dropped by the kid and you read it and it says that some kids are going to beat them up after school. What can you do in this situation to help out? You don't want to let it go on but you don't know what to do.
Every once in awhile people say things they don't mean, or just to try to fit in. Three out of four bullies have been bullied themselves. People who feel good about who they are don't feel the need to put others down. Maybe if that person hadn't been bullied, they would not be doing it themselves.
Schools should be a safe place for every youth to learn. It is not safe if people are being bullied. Bullying can happen to anyone, anywhere, at anytime. Don't put yourself at risk to become a victim. You deserve a safe school.
